So, was shovelling mud today, as you do when communities too close to you have been so destructively flooded, when the lady whose land I was serving said what an amazing strong ant I was. It was a compliment. Guess I don't look strong, but when she was seeking mud-shovellers, I and another young lass, fresh up from Melbourne, were all that were on offer. So initially she directed me to wash the plants. The clay, dries like cement and smothers the roots and the clay-mud on the leaves prevents them breathing. But, inevitably I end up shovelling mud... for a few hours I did my bit .. a sturdy, far more enduring ant than she expected.

So, made me think. When I arrived back in Bryon, keen to help but shy to offer, I began to suffer what's called 'survivors guilt'. You've lost nothing but your friends' and community have lost everything. You feel overwhelmed and you are too troubled to stay home and live your usual life, though denial is tempting. So, you shovel mud and transport possessions. You feel like you are doing so little. You take a few meagre supplies to friends that don't really need it and feel pretty useless really. But your emotions motivate you to keep offering and you start to surrender your individual will to the amazing community spirit. And there's an energy that you start to feel. You don't matter as an individual. On an individual scale you are doing nothing, but together with such an amazing group of people doing just a little, you achieve. You can't judge yourself as an individual but the community makes magic and transformation and that community will rebuild.

There is so much to be done to rebuild these communities. And we really need to think about how we are living that this climate is shouting so loudly to stop. To stop living with our individual needs dominating and to live in consideration to others and the nature we are part of.
